The Haiwan Tea Factory & Its Founder Zou Bing Liang

The Lao Tong Zhi (Old Comrade) brand is one of the most popular pu erh tea brands in China. It’s lead by one of China’s most (if not the most) reputable person in the industry: Zou Bing Liang, born in 1939.

Mr. Zhou has a background in commodity inspection and tea biochemical analysis and started out his career as a tea evaluation expert at the Menghai Tea Factory in 1957. In 1973 he lead a team to study the concept of ‘wet piling’ (wo dui) to speed up the fermentation process of pu erh tea. This lead to the discovery of ‘ripe pu erh’ as we know today. In 1984 became the director of Menghai Tea Factory.

Eventually Zhou Bing Liang started his own factory to fully express its own philosophy in crafting pu erh tea in 1999. the Haiwan Tea Factory was born.
